In my early twenties I studied Japanese language
and culture at University. What I took from that time
is some nice Japanese-English dictionaries to look up the
Japanese characters, but also a love for Japanese haiku.
Do you know what a haiku is? It is a kind of poem where
only 17 syllables are used. Here is an example by
Japanese poet, Matsuo Basho.
Furu ike ya
mizu no oto
The ancient pond
A frog leaps in
The sound of the water.
(Translated by Donald Keene)
This got me thinking about how I would introduce myself
using only seventeen syllables or less. Here is my first
try at it. To introduce my work and my approach:
As above so below
Look: cycling stars
Red cheeks like Mars
For how I look at life and try living it:
Radiant summer child loves life,
stars shining bright
Just factual who I am:
Counting: 2 hands, 2 feet, 2 kids, 1 man
one boat, one love. Complete.
What is your 17 syllables (or less) expression of you?
