You know the type of school where children shine and radiate? Do you know them, have you heard of them? Something else must be possible? Please! Anyone?
Questions like this began popping up in my mind by the time my eldest was three years old. I had resisted enrolling here in a regular school for that reason. I ran into several school that appealed with their new approach on learning.
One of them is The Sudbury Valley school , there is no curriculum, the children choose what they want to do and learn independently according to their own needs. With excellent results. I read all the books available on this system. Inspiring and appealing.
Another school that inspires me is the Reggio Emilia Approach to education. I got goose bumps of excitement when I read the book of C. Edwards and L Gandini called The Hundred Languages of Children: The Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education. I found a whole list of links that you can investigate into.
I must admit that my children have joined the regular school-system and are doing very well in it. In the Netherlands the Reggio Emilia and Sudbury Valley Schools are in an experimental stage still. Perhaps later I will transfer them. For the time being I try and teach them to be themselves and listen to what they feel and experience. I encourage them to be independent, creative and thinking up their own solutions. That is a huge statement, I know. But I began anyway. Along the way they taught me to be myself too. I am grateful to them for this present. I am looking forward to what else they will make me explore.
