Stephen informed me that he is banned by the Chinese government. Curiously I tried my own url and I am banned too. This is ridiculous, what is happening here? Are more blogs on WordPress blocked? I tried 10 blogs that I use and that I consider regular main stream. Well, I mean nothing horrific that should be banned kind of things. And they are all banned.
I tried some other websites as well. Greenpeace.nl is open, Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant is open, New York Times is open. So there is no bug involved that makes all URL be blocked. The website of Great Firewall of China.org is worth a visit.
Whose website is this?
A non-profit group of both Chinese and Dutch creatives who want to make the censorship system transparent and keep open the discussion on censorship. Aim of this website is to be a watchdog and keep track of which and how many or how many times sites are censored. Help to keep the censorship transparent. Each blocked website will automatically be added to the great firewall on the homepage.
On the website the disclaimer says:
This version 1.0 may report sites as being ‘blocked’, while there are only technical reasons for their unavailability.
How it works We’ve opened a website in China and route your url request on greatfirewallofchina.org through to our server in China. The server in China opens the url and the result is send back. Our testing is only based on one server on one location in China.
Why would WordPress blogs be banned? What on earth other than technical problems can be the reason for this? It makes me think of freedom of speech and the information and all the fun that people miss out on, in China in this case.
P.S. I just found out that wordpress.com is blocked. So all the url with wordpress are censored and not available.
