Once upon a time, I promised myself not to get into meme or tagging people. It seems like those chain letters that never get me anywhere. Michael asked me ‘to do it for him’ and I did. Much to my surprise I liked this little exercise and memories of long ago arrived on my doorstep. It was fun since I got all melancholic and emo over music and events of 1977, the year I entered high school. I even searched Youtube and played many songs loud on my beautiful mac machine. Wow, that felt good. Too bad that the Mozart Requiem was not in fashion in 1977, that is my all time favorite piece of music.
These are the rules for the meme:
1. Go to the Billboard#1 Hits listings (scroll down and you’ll seen them separated by decades on the left in the sidebar)
2. Pick a year you were in high school
3. Get yourself nostalgic over the songs of that year
4. Pick 5 songs and write something about how these songs affected you
5. Pass it on to 5 more people.
Dancing Queen – Abba
I turned 12 in June and I was a sweet girl, raised in a small town, not very much exposed to the world. My girlfriend liked Abba and she collected everything from them. Her whole room was full of pictures of Anna-Frid, Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha. With her in her bedroom we sang and sang their songs every afternoon we spent together. “You’re in the mood for a dance and when you get the chance… You are the dancing queen”.
Denis Denis – Blondie
We had a party half way the first year with the whole class. Some boys persuaded me into singing with them. They did Queen and I was to be their bassist. Then they found out that I loved Blondie! Next thing I know: Perform as Blondie please! I did and it was fun, including the throwing around with my long blond hair. Mum and dad were very much surprised: the party was at our place and I had not told them before it happened.
Staying alive – Bee Gees
From the movie Saturday Night Fever, the first movie I saw in the cinema. With some girl friends and my father. I don’t remember whether I completely understood the movie. I looked at the very young John Travolta and the many dancing scenes in the movie. Remember I was more green than an evergreen. The clip has the dancing scene from the movie. It seems old fashioned now. It was very hip then.
Fly like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band
The lyrics say it all. I want to fly like an eagle To the sea Fly like an eagle Let my spirit carry me I want to fly like an eagle Till I’m free. People that have been reading this blog for a while know that I would love to fly by myself. This is the song that I will still sing when the longing comes back to me.
Lost Without Your Love – Bread
When I transferred to high school I had to leave my old school. I was befriended with one girl and two boys. We sat together in the hallway, the class was too big to fit in the room. At the end of the year we were separated because of the test results and choices for schools. My long time buddy Joris entered the same school as I did. However we were not allowed in the same class. He got a higher degree in the test. We were both devastated and could never find a way to speak to each other without making matters worse. The school year ended with a party for all people in the first class. We finally met and danced on this song, close together, one more time. Here is the clip.
I kindly ask Bill, Simonne, Catherine, Ceeque and Nora to take this meme and tell me about their favorite high school hits. Anyone else wants to join in? Please leave a comment. I am off to listen to more of my high school hits, I am all energized and happy after this return to 1977.
