In three days time I am leaving.
To walk on the GR 65, Grande Randonee, long distance path .
Following white and red painted markers for 750 kilometers or more.
From Le Puy en Velay to where my feet will carry me.
My bag is now 5 kilo only.
Without the water that I will have to carry too.
Heavy mountain boats will be my best friends.
Walking long distance paths began when I met my husband in 1995. Within weeks after meeting each other we began walking the GR 5 in the Netherlands. About 400 km and we went every weekend, or nearly every weekend and all holidays. I was horrible, out of shape and moaning about the pack on my back. Walking 12 km on the first was a long distance. And blisters. O my. I can tell you a lot about blisters. Not now.
Honeymoon was walking the GR 11, across Spain through the Spanish Pyrenees. High mountain area with camping in the wild. I walked behind my husband and his backpack, his bum and his legs held no more secrets after 5 weeks. It is amazing how quickly you get into better shape. Within 5 days my muscles had grown and were stronger. And I lost weight very fast. Eating well is an issue since the body uses more energy than it normally does. You have to carry all the food yourself too.
This time, what a luxury, I carry no tent and stove. The possibilities for sleeping are excellent with many small and big pilgrim places along the path. Some days there is hardly any towns. Or hammocks. Since the area is quite deserted.
My fear of walking by myself has totally gone. After booking the ticket to Lyon I have been excited and looking forward to doing it. I will now go pick up two trousers that were gifted by a friend. More later.
